When it comes to growing your hair, some of us have all the luck when it comes to achieving those long flourless locks. However, if like so many of us, your hair just seems to give up when it reaches a certain length what should you do?

So you’ve already tried it all:
– Coconut oil at night time
– Hair conditioning treatments
– You’ve stopped cutting your hair all together

But still nothing?

Here is some of our top tips to help you to strengthen your hair and get the length you want:

  1. Nutrition

It may sound cliché but you really ‘ARE WHAT YOU EAT’. If your hair is not receiving enough nutrients it will break off, often at the same rate as it is growing (half an inch a month). Iron, Vitamin D, B-complex, and zinc are the main vitamins and minerals you need for optimal for healthy hair.

How do you get these in my diet?

To name but a few:

  • Eggs
  • Spinach
  • Mushrooms
  • Avocados
  • Chicken
  • Salmon
  • Lamb
  • Turkey
  • Pumpkin seeds
  • Legumes
  • Whole grains
  1. Your hair care routine.

Good or bad we all live by some form haircare routine, but there are some bad habits which we have probably all been guilty of at various stages in our lives.

What are some of the biggest hair care blunders?

  • Washing your hair in steaming hot water
  • Applying and rinsing shampoo and conditioner quickly too quickly before there is time for it to work its magic.
  • Dragging and brushing through your hair aggressively to get rid of any tangles/ knots
  • Blow dry, straighten or curl on high heat to get it done quickly

How to change these habits to help your hair grow:

-Try brushing your hair before you go in the shower – when your hair is weak from washing you can do a lot of damage.
-Wash your hair on a medium heat to avoid the hot water dehydrating your hair.
-Leave your conditioner in for a few minutes so it can work its magic and help restore nutrients.
-Use a deep conditioning treatment at least once a week
-Make sure you aren’t wrapping your hair in a towel – this can cause a whole lot of damage that can easily be stopped.
-If you can leave your hair to dry naturally or part dry it naturally.
-Before using a hair dryer apply hair oil/crème and definitely heat protection spray.
-Keep your hairdryer, straighteners and curlers on a medium heat.

3. Don’t ignore split ends?
Split ends are something that we all encounter at some stage, whether they are caused by product overuse, excessive colouring, straightening and curling or just not having your hair cut regularly enough.

The key to keeping the split ends at bay is reducing the amount of intense heat, towel drying and aggressive hair brushing.

4. The role of genetics
Like it or not genetics will always play a role in how you look and this is no different when it comes to your hair. Everyone has a cycle of hair growth specific to them and as you get older, your scalp will begin to produce less oil leading to dryer and coarser hair which is more prone to split ends and breakage.
